Using radar scans and analysis of sand grains buried deep inside the star dune, scientists mapped the mound’s internal structure. “It’s moving about half a meter per year,” demonstrating that star dunes are about as active as most other dunes, Duller told CNN. A mystery solvedThe new findings also addressed a longstanding mystery for geologists: Where is all the ancient evidence of star dunes? Star dunes are so big; perhaps eroded parts of their preserved structures were previously identified as standalone remnants of other types of dunes, the study authors reported. “The fact that star dunes have not been identified very much in the stratigraphic record may partly be because many geologists were not very much aware of star dunes and only knew about longitudinal dunes and barchans (crescent-shaped dunes),” Goudie said.

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman attends the weekly government cabinet meeting at 10 Downing Street on May 23, 2023 in London, England. LONDON — U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday fired controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman, as he begins a reshuffle of his top cabinet. In a shock move, former Prime Minister David Cameron was announced as the new foreign minister. "While I have been out of front-line politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience – as Conservative Leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six – will assist me in helping the Prime Minister to meet these vital challenges." Braverman drew widespread criticism last week after printing an op-ed in The Times newspaper that ignored guidance from Downing Street and accused London police of political bias in policing protests.

Calling it the "best fundamental story" among U.S. large caps, UBS analyst Colin Bristow on Friday lifted his price target to $612 from $526. The stock has already gained 47% year to date, mostly on the back of lofty expectations for weight loss drug sales. Bristow also expects data for its Crohn's disease treatment by year-end, as well as readouts on Verzenio for prostate cancer. Then by 2024, Lilly is expected to submit data for a cell therapy for type 1 diabetes. And there's potential for even more upside if the drug adds other indications such as renal treatment, he said.

Investors would be forgiven if talk of a potential suicide risk associated with a new class of diabetes and weight loss drugs led to skittishness last week. Prior attempts to treat overweight or obese patients with medications were often plagued with side effects and drug recalls. The first is that most obesity drugs, including GLP-1s, are "centrally acting," which means they work on a patient's brain. The second is that prior obesity drugs have been withdrawn because of high rates of psychiatric disorders, he said, citing Sanofi's Acomplia as one of the more recent examples. This was not the case for the GLP-1 medications.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell arrives to testify during the House Financial Services Committee hearing titled "The Federal Reserve's Semi-Annual Monetary Policy Report," in Rayburn Building on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. Let it be known: The leader of the U.S. Federal Reserve, the most important central bank in the world, is a Deadhead. No one is ever likely to confuse Jerome Powell with Jerry Garcia, but the policymaker apparently likes to stop and smell the "Scarlet Begonias" when he can. But the subject finally did come up Wednesday when he addressed legislators on the House Financial Services Committee. Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.) said he was "excited" to hear that Powell was at the show, and asked him what he thought.

The Rays Are Better Than Everyone. At Everything.
  + stars: | 2023-05-04 | by ( Tyler Kepner | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays had just won again Tuesday night, but their architect was flustered by a small crack in the foundation. Erik Neander, the Rays’ president of baseball operations, wondered if any available veterans were lined up to start in the minors the next day. Anderson had pitched for a month in the Rays’ farm system last summer — and, most important, was lined up to start a morning game in Omaha in about 12 hours. The Rays made the requisite phone calls, got Anderson for cash considerations — “Maybe a dollar,” Neander said — and booked him on a 7 a.m. flight on Wednesday. That night, naturally, Anderson pitched three scoreless innings against Pittsburgh for his first career save in the majors.
Barrick has been building its copper business organically and said it is exploring copper drilling opportunities in countries such as Chile and Argentina. "We have always said that if you want to be relevant as a gold miner you have to be in copper business," Bristow added. Gold is often a byproduct of copper, a critical metal required for electrification and the transition to a greener economy. Teck last month withdrew its plan to split its coal and metals business after it failed to secure shareholders' approval. Bristow said Glencore's proposal made a "lot of sense" as Glencore could handle Teck's debt and had offered a clean split of Teck's business.

On Tuesday, JPMorgan's board of directors provided a little more insight into its CEO succession plans via a 116-page annual proxy filing. Additions to the organizational chart also highlight the growth within some of JPMorgan's key teams. It also provides some clues as to who might one day succeed Dimon, Wall Street's longest running CEO.
First Citizens Bank, the company that bought the assets of SVB, is run by a family with a wealth of experience buying failed banks. Forbes looked at the billionaire family that's guided First Citizens' purchase of more than 20 small banks since 2008. First Citizens will be among the largest 20 banks in the US with the SVB deal. Its purchases of failed banks include First Regional Bank and Temecula Valley Bank in California and Denver-based United Western Bank. Its assets jumped from $109 billion just before the SVB deal and have increased from $16.7 billion at the end of 2008.
WASHINGTON, March 14 (Reuters) - Beta Technologies is pursuing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for a fixed-wing electric airplane after receiving orders from three customers, the company announced Tuesday. The privately-held, Vermont-based startup sees certification of the CX 300 – a conventional takeoff and landing version of its Alia 250 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft - as a path to introduce an electric aircraft into U.S. airspace under existing regulations, Chief Executive Kyle Clark told Reuters. Bristow Group, a helicopter service provider that has previously ordered eVTOL aircraft from Beta, has placed an order for up to 50 CX 300 electric planes, Beta said. As the air transport industry works to lower carbon emissions, electric "air taxis" are seen as a potential gamechanger that would allow airlines and other companies to shuttle people and goods by air over short distances. If successful, Beta can reuse much of the data to certify its eVTOL Alia aircraft, which uses the same airframe, batteries and propulsion system, Clark said.
The Newcrest acquisition by Newmont, if successful, could result in the enlarged company shedding some assets. Bristow stuck to the company's 'build, not buy' approach and ruled out the possibility that Barrick would launch a counter bid for Newcrest. Newmont's offer implied a 21% premium to Newcrest's share price. Barrick last month reported a 13.4% rise in gold production as access to high-grade ore at its Cortez and Carlin mines in Nevada powered a "strong finish" to the fourth quarter. Production for the year, however, was 4.1 million ounces of gold, down from 4.4 million ounces in 2021.
Gold miner unearths risky M&A seam

That’s precisely what Newmont (NEM.N) boss Tom Palmer has just done, offering $17 billion in stock for Australian gold excavator Newcrest Mining (NCM.AX). At present Newmont is offering a 22% premium to the target’s undisturbed share price, after Newcrest rejected an earlier 17% boost. What Canada’s Barrick Gold (ABX.TO) does in response is the main question. It is the world’s largest gold miner, which at $40 billion sports a market capitalisation 25% higher than Barrick’s. Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO), the $24 billion third-largest miner of the ore, may want to dig in, too.
Analyst Colin Bristow downgraded shares to neutral from buy, and lowered his price target, citing weaker Covid expectations and a sluggish pipeline for new products. Pfizer shares are down more than 12% this year on expectations that the number and severity of Covid cases will stabilize. At the same time, UBS did not make any "meaningful changes" to its pipeline estimates for Pfizer following the firm's R & D day. The new target is just about in line with where Pfizer shares closed Wednesday at $44.66. "While we see minimal downside from here, the lack of catalysts (see inside) and potential for further downside to COVID estimates drives our move to the sidelines," Bristow wrote.
